Rules
The Quiz is open for
participation by students enrolled in any primary or secondary schools
in Hong Kong as well as by the general public. Questions will be
selected randomly by the server. The format is the same for all three
divisions:
-
Primary schools (for students of all
primary schools in Hong Kong)
-
Secondary schools (for students of all
secondary schools in Hong Kong)
-
Public (for Hong Kong
citizens who are not studying at any primary or secondary schools)
1. Preliminary Competition:
-
Duration: the Quiz will cover a total
of 8 weeks between 1 January 2004 and 29 February 2004
(inclusively).
-
Venue: it is offered
online only.
-
Eligibility: it is
open for all primary and secondary school students in Hong Kong.
There is no limit as to how many times a student may attempt to
play.
-
Scoring: in each
game, a student will be given two phrases on the screen. Within the
time limit, the student should click on the phrase of the preferred usage.
One mark will be added to the score if the student gets the
preferred answer; otherwise one mark will be deducted. If no answer
is chosen before the time runs out, one mark will be deducted too.
-
Top players: scores
will be compared to decide positions on the chart. When two scores are
the same, the one with more questions attempted will be ranked
higher. If the number of questions attempted is the same as well,
the score recorded earlier will get a higher position.
-
Finalist selection:
at the end of the first four weeks, the chart will be cut off and
the top player in each district will get the right to participate in
the final competition. By the same token, the top players in the second four
weeks will become another 18 finalists. Of course, if the second 18
finalists include those who have already been admitted to the final in
the first four weeks, the right to the final will be transferred to
the second best players in the respective districts during that
period.
-
Disqualification: all
participants are required to fill in a valid email address (or a
local phone number) for contact. If our notification email (or call)
fails to reach the mailbox (for reasons including a full mailbox) or
if a participant fails to acknowledge our email (or call) before the
date stipulated, the participant may be disqualified.
-
Disputes: in case
of disputes, the organizer reserves the right of making the final
judgment.
2. Final Competition:
-
Date and time: 10 am - 2 pm, 21
March 2004 (Sunday)
-
Venue: ReadingLand, Room 202, Park Building, 476
Castle Peak Road, Kowloon
-
Format: for each of the three
divisions, the 36 finalists will be invited to the venue for a live
contest which adopts a format similar to that in the preliminary
competition. Each finalist will be given three chances to play, and the
scores will then be compared to decide the final champion.
-
Handling of a tie: when there is a tie
in the top score, the relevant finalists will play one more game in
turn, until the champion is identified.
-
Bilingual players: the Chinese and
English finals will be held on the same day but the Chinese final
will go first. Players who are interested in both
languages should feel free to participant in both games.
-
At the end of the final, all the
award-winners should stay behind to attend reporters' interview, if
any.
